Canadian Earthquake and How Animals Do Strange Things

Where Were You When the Earthquake Happened?

Thinking we are impervious to the tectonic shifts and ruptures that hold thelives of West Coasters hostage is only a matter of education.  On Wednesday, June 23rd, a 5.0 magnitude earthquake emanating from the Ontario/Quebec borderlands was felt as far away as Ohio and Maryland, and right here in Massachusetts. In the East our geology differs from the West, so we feel earthquakes farther away than if we were in California.

Earthquakes rupture at a certain depth below the earth’s surface called the hypocenter.   The depth estimated by seismologists for Wednesdays midday quake was 10.2 miles. Animals often exhibit unusual behavior in the days prior to a quake but the mechanism for this eludes us.

Because of increased population, better technology and more reporting stations, it may seem like earthquakes are on the rise, when, in fact, quakes of 7.0 or more have decreased in recent years.

Aftershocks can occur for months following an earthquake but the decrease in magnitude makes it unlikely that you will feel it here.

I heard it.  It was like a sharp explosion under the pavement and I wondered if a sinkhole would open up.  I found this all over YouTube.  Watch how funny the guy giving the news conference is.

Southern California experienced a 5.5 earthquake this week. We were at Home Depot and never felt a thing, although some people apparently ran for the exit and others just stood and watched the pendant lamps quiver. I had expected to be unnerved during my first quake. Now I am more unnerved to realize that I could be so lost in trying to discern differences among shades of white that I never noticed the earth moving beneath my feet. Either that or Home Depot installed terrifically stable flooring.
File this under a whiter shade of pale?

Sometimes I need step out of my comfort zone, Lucy.
Sometimes, you need to find shelter in someone else's, because I'm not sure you recognize your own, if indeed you have one :-)
